Don’t vote for me to win. Seriously.

October 11, 2011 § 3 Comments

I'm a winner on www.havealovelytime.com

This is a somewhat unusual post. Unlike the (seemingly) myriad requests to vote for someone for being the smiliest person in Berkshire, this is a plea for you to NOT vote for me. Well, ish.

I have been (ridiculously) lucky enough to have been Highly Commended in the Have a Lovely Time actual proper Travel Writing competition, and there is a special (secret) Reader’s Prize for the most popular of the eight Highly Commended entries.

And that is the point. It is a writing competition, not a popularity contest, so I don’t want you to vote for me because I’m lovely (I am) or because you think I am funny (haha or peculiar, don’t mind) or even because you have met my husband and feel sorry for me. You may think you’d rather not vote for a sarcastic old cynic (see * below)

But IF you think my entry is the most well-written, the funniest, the weirdest or the most Welsh, click away and vote for me.You aren’t even required to register so the ‘competition’ promoter can build themselves a saleable marketing mailing list afterwards*

And then we can all find out what the Readers’ Mystery Prize actually is…

So have *you* won the Buy Student Art competition?…

BuyStudentArt competition- Meet Laura Lou

May 12, 2011 § Leave a comment

As you cannot fail to be as excited about the BuyStudentArt competition as we are, we thought you might like to know a little bit more about the creative type behind our fabulous prize. So, without further ado (and if she goes on to make millions I hope you will all remember where you first saw her), please meet the lovely Laura Lou.

“My name is Laura Louise Power, or Laura Lou you take your pick. I was born at home in a small town called Stourbridge in the West Midlands on April 25th 1992. So i’m 19 years of age. I have two siblings a brother age 16 and a sister aged 6, who is adorable, my brother not so much. Anyway …
Since I was young I have always loved artistic hobbies in general. My mother used to tell me that from a very young age , I would wake up and go downstairs to draw or colour, before doing anything else, that was my priority. My favourite toy for many years was my spirograph, a very easy way to make pretty patterns.” [this was also my favourite toy, but I can’t draw to save my life!]

As well as being an artist, Laura is also a skilled dancer, and has been dancing since she was 3, and teaching since she was 16. She won a prestigious place at the Hammond School of Dance in Chester where she  recently finished her A levels, including, of course, a top grade in A level Art.

“I mainly paint, as I enjoy the experience, I find it very relaxing and therapeutic. However, I always aim for perfection and often if a painting does not go according to plan, I will spend the rest of the day very frustrated. Mid you, it’s no better if a piece is going well and I am pleased with my work, as I will spend hours and hours in silence, aiming for the perfect detail, adding intricate tonal shading and details.

I feel this makes my pieces unique to others, you can sense the care that has gone into each piece. I mainly use acrylics as my medium, because I love the vibrant tones and added texture although I also use watercolour paints, as this nicely contasts with simple and tranquil shades.”

“I now live in Chester, and I now purely paint for enjoyment. My forte is still life, especially floral compositions. However, i would love to be taught the skills needed to master landscape paintings. For this reason, one of my favourite artists is  Philip Gray – his work is breathtaking, and his pieces fill me with emotion. One day I hope my work will portray this too.”
I think she’s pretty darn good now!

Fast Facts about Laura Lou:

  • She plays the flute at grade 8 standard and the piano at grade 5
  • She loves the colour red and polkadots but dislikes the colour green
  • She love the view of rapeseed fields, and thinks the yellow is beautiful
  • She’s a tea addict :)

Don’t forget, there’s still time to enter the competition to win Laura’s piece Reflection, or you can buy one of her other pieces on the BuyStudentArt site.

To enter, simply

  1. Leave a comment on this blog post including the word ‘reflection’
  2. Follow @BuyStudentArt on Twitter and tweet “I love @BuyStudentArt”
  3. Like the BuyStudentArt facebook page

And if you do all three, you get three chances to enter. So what are you waiting for?

Fab BuyStudentArt Competition! Win actual Art. For free.

May 8, 2011 § 4 Comments

Well, despite the fact that I am currently languishing in my tonsillectomy sick bed, in six weeks time I will be gallivanting about at Cybermummy, thanks to my fab sponsor Kerri from BuyStudentArt.

BuyStudentArt is a new business that aims to let you own original artwork, for a fraction of the price you would pay in a gallery. Of course, the art is by students, or those just starting out on their art career, but think of it as an opportunity to get in at the ground floor, while making your living space beautiful at the same time.

The art on the site ranges from just a few pounds, up to £2,300, but most are between £20 and £300. And there are some right beauties and bargains to be found. Like this piece, called Reflections, by Laura Lou. Bet you’d like to have that hanging on your wall wouldn’t you?

Well unfortunately you can’t. Unless you would like it for FREE.

To celebrate my lovely sponsorship and because I think it’s a lovely painting, Mumazing are offerig one lucky reader the chance to win this lovely picture for free. All you have to do to enter is one of three things:

The competition will close at 10am on Monday 6 June (after the Whitsun holiday), but don’t leave it til the last minute. Go. Now.

Later in the week we will be talking to the artist, Laura-Lou Power about what inspires her and what she likes to paint, so come back then!

STOP PRESS because of my ineptitude unprecedented demand the competition deadline is being extended to 3pm Tuesday 11th June. Also the facebook way of entering is now banned (by Facebook) so get commenting or tweeting now. NOW.
